It happened during MIME-decoding of the message, but the story
is the same.

The 4xx response to MTA indicates a temporary failure,
the mailer will retry later (for a couple of days, depending
on its settings). If the problem is not resolved by then,
the sender receives a non-delivery notification from the mailer.
