I had a small discussion with Brian and Henrique of the topic,
back when the 2.0 was still young. They were aware of a list of
security issues with 20030616p10 that were fixed in 2.x,
and the list has grown since, now that we are at 2.2.1.
Some fixes can be backported to 20030616p10, but some of them
required a redesign of some internal part, which is why the development
left the 20030616 behind. If you are using 20030616, you are depending
more an more on the Debian folks, as I'm gradually loosing the
six months old version from sight and experience, and the 2.x is also
more friendly in its log reports for remote (by mail) diagnostics.
They can read RELEASE_NOTES (and so can you), it is their decision
on which version to support, but it is also your own decision to use it,
or to prefer the most recent recommended version.

This functional flaw can probably be fixed by a small patch to 20030616p10.
I hope the posting from Michael Hall provided the fix, I'm sure it can
be quickly incorporated into the Debian package.

The FreeBSD port so far has kept in lockstep with the most recent
releases of amavisd-new :)
